Literary dinner with Rupert McCall and Kari Gislason
Cool Viking Gets A Warm Goondiwindi Welcome
- Ian Jones, editor Goondiwindi Argus
A cool viking strode into Goondiwindi last week, and while he didn’t wind up in a gutter pledging undying love, he did in the words of another modern day warrior, promise, “I’ll be back.”
That is, if we want him.
And if the response to his visit last week as a special guest of the Macintyre Young Writers’ Committee is anything to go by, it won’t be too long before his next visit.
“A revelation”, former Goondiwindi Argus Editor, Joe Hoffmann, said of author, Kari Gislason.
Mr Hoffmann, who was one of the driving forces behind the MYW along with his wife Rose, and Goondiwindi teacher Catherine Day, said Kari’s presentation at the 20th anniversary dinner at the Royal Hotel last week, was “one of the best” given by the myriad of literary guests over the years.
He was indeed a hard act to follow, but the people’s poet, Rupert McCall did it with style, class, self-effacing wit and a prodigious memory.
Like the veteran entertainer he is, he left the more than 100 people there, wanting more.
Dr Kári Gíslason
Kari is currently a teacher at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), whilst working on his second novel about a book of personal reflections of the Second Secretary General of the UN, discovered after he died in a plane crash in 1961. Kari said “I’m interested in the relationship between inner conflict and searching, duty and sense of sacrifice.” Kari admits to touching on some similar territory to that of his memoir, but this time aiming to draw out his grandfather’s story which was only briefly touched upon in his memoir. Kari’s PHD in Medieval Literature, sparking from an obsession with Scandinavia, is what Kari ‘blames’for falling in love with teaching. “I just kept
on studying, I couldn’t stop,” he laughs, “and when you have a PHD in literature you’re pretty unemployable because you’re massively qualified in an area that’s of no use at all, except teaching English literature.” Tahlia Richardson, a QUT student says after one class with Kari she knew she was going to enjoy her course. Three years down the track, under the guidance of Kari’s teaching she adds, “No one will ever, ever have a class with Kari in which he doesn’t find an excuse to talk about Iceland,” Tahlia laughs, “and I don’t think anyone really minds.” After graduating in English and Law, Kari Gislason wrote a doctoral thesis on concepts of authorship in medieval Iceland. He published scholarly articles dealing with the
family sagas, as well as shorter pieces about Iceland for newspapers
and literary journals. Kari has taught English Literature and writing at the University of Iceland and the University of Queensland, and currently lectures in Creative Writing and Literary Studies at Queensland University of Technology. He lives in Brisbane with his wife, Olanda, and their two children Finnur and
Magnus. Read more here on Dr Gíslason's blog.
