About the competition
It’s one of the biggest junior writing competitions in the State, and it’s on again! Welcome to Macintyre Young Writers, home of all things literary for young writers in the Macintyre area. For almost 30 years, the Macintyre Young Writers have fostered writing in school-aged children throughout the region. It has awarded more than 6,000 budding young writers with certificates, cash prizes and books.
History
Macintyre Young Writers Inc is celebrating its 29th year of operation in 2023 and continues to receive widespread community support from the many schools, parents, and sponsors in our district. Our Open Competition for people over 18 years of age was established a number of years ago.
In 2013 our first adult writers’ workshop was conducted by Dr Kári Gíslason; in 2014 local writer Nicole Alexander also ran a writer’s workshop. Dr Kate Cantrell from USQ,Toowoomba, Lecturer in Creative writing, Editing and Publishing has already conducted a workshop for our Open Writers this year. This was well supported and gives credence to our Writers’ Group for adults.
The Goondiwindi Argus has long been a strong supporter and we thank Ian Jones for his valuable assistance. Over the years some of our guests, at both Literary Dinners and/or at workshops with students, have included Hugh Lunn, Jason ‘Rupert’ McCall, Mike O’Connor, John Marsden, Stephen Axelsen, Narelle Oliver, Jill Morris, Andy Wright, Marie Nielson, Pauline Clyne, Kerry O’Keefe, Tristan Bancks, Kári Gíslason and Doctor Gregory Smith, author of ‘Out of the Forest”.
2013 saw the inaugural Readeo night. More than 60 people attended a camp-oven dinner with readings by local men.
Our aim in 2022 is to continue to encourage all ages to participate in our writing endeavours whether it be through our Junior Competition (school-aged) or our Open Competition.
The Macintyre Young Writers’ Awards is now a familiar part of the local literary landscape. You are invited to play a most important role in it again this year.
